RATS!

I am having a rat problem that has me looking into alternate kinds of traps. These rats are SMART and I haven't got a single one in a trap yet. My dogs have gotten three over the years so they are...

Re: RATS!

Those rats get much smarter and they'll be opening the p-butter jar themselves!!That about sums it up. I think, given my experiences so far, that I need to try the live cage, which means I have to get...

Re: RATS!

I suspect something else is stealing the bait.  With the snap traps my experience has been if a rat springs the trap and it misses, the rat learns to avoid the trap.  Could you have a raccoon or...

Re: RATS!

Keith, I csn't rule it out. I see raccoons on my early morning walks, though never in my immefiate neighborhood. It's been several years since I've seen a possum but they do exist in Portlad, as do...

Re: RATS!

Putting the snap traps in a cubby is the proper way to go. I should have mentioned that, having used it on chipmunks and squirrels that were robbing the trap. Cubbies are commonly used with coni's as...

Re: RATS!

Half of a clothespin (type with the metal spring) should have been too tall. My wedges are about half that tall where the spring ends rest on them. Much taller and the dog (catch on the pan/trigger)...

Re: RATS!

Duxdawg, excellent info. Bookmarked those links and I will write more when I'm not online with a stupid tablet; it takes forever for me to type on one.

Re: RATS!

I like that site with the modifications to the Victor trap and even though I have pretty given up on getting anything with one, I am going to try the mods suggested. I have nothing to lose. I don't...

Re: RATS!

Fencing isn't going to hurt any. I was wondering if they were coming at the trap from behind (which is unlikely to catch 'em) but they got away again so maybe not. Wonder how they learned that deft...

Re: RATS!

Thanks for all the suggestions! At this point, it has become more a matter of principle to me than anything else; it's hard not to think "I am smarter than a rat" but the evidence does not back me up...

Karloff says "This is what I would do if I weren't almost 16 years old now":But, alas, he is getting too decrepit to catch anything these days. Coulaine, in the background, is not, though. Karloff...

Re: RATS!

Maybe the spirit of Karloff helped me out - or maybe it was the mesh I put over the trap trigger (thanks for that link, DuxDawg!), but look at this:Sorry about the blurry quality, but it was raining...

Re: RATS!

Ho ho! Nabbed one! Waidmannsheil!! (German hunter's greeting that is also used as "congratulations, well done".) Apparently that rat did not have any appropriate tricks up his sleeve to deal with this...

Re: RATS!

I will be sure to relay your approval of the photo to Karloff, who will appreciate it. In another life, I was a professional photographer, although that photo of the rat sure wouldn't demonstrate it....

Re: RATS!

After all that trouble, I do hope you plan on getting it mounted.  In the least brain tan it.  Once you have 3 more you can make snow booties for one of the dogs.

Re: RATS!

I thought about making rat rawhide but decided it wasn't worth the work. You could make a quiver for toothpicks, though. But brain tanning a rat is more than I want to contemplate.

Re: RATS!

I'm glad you finally got one! That looks like a Black Rat though......Norway rats are more grizzled and brown. If you get more of them, do you know anyone that owns a large python or boa? I'm sure...

Re: RATS!

You could be right about the ID. According to the info I found online Portland hosts mostly Norway and Roof Rats. My rat spotting skills probably aren't what they should be. Any rat experts have an...

Re: RATS!

Yeah, I would keep rolling with the mesh as is, at least until it stops working or you have more traps to try variants on. A few holes shouldn't be a big deal, just so long as they have to work it a...

Re: RATS!

I only thought of the lap steel nut because I have an old one I was restoring but it had a crappy plastic nut instead of bone. A bone nut would work just as well for the trap but why waste a good bone...
